I’ve been there—more than once. And if you’ve ever felt the same, you’re not alone. Anytime we begin to shift something in our lives, our old patterns come knocking, trying to pull us back into what's familiar.
We often think the problem is us—our lack of willpower, our inconsistency, our inability to "stick with it." But what if the problem isn’t you? What if it’s the approach?
Today, I want to offer a gentler, more sustainable way to think about change: one that starts in the present moment and builds from where you already are.
How often do we enter a new year, season, or life phase with a “new me” mindset?
Maybe it’s a New Year’s resolution. Maybe it’s the “hot girl summer” mentality. We want to be that person—the one who has it all together, wakes up early, drinks green juice, checks every box, and somehow still finds time to work out daily.
But here’s the hard truth: that mentality is flawed at its core.
When we chase a complete reinvention of ourselves, we:
Assume change should be easy, and that we are the problem when it’s not
Use guilt and past failures as motivation (which rarely works)
Fixate on a future version of ourselves that may not even be realistic
Instead of obsessing over a future we haven’t reached—or punishing ourselves for a past we can’t change—what if we focused on what we can do today?
What if we made decisions that served us where we are right now?
Here’s what that could look like:
Instead of pushing for "swimsuit-ready abs," choose to go for a walk today because it helps you de-stress.
Instead of starting a juice cleanse to “detox,” choose nourishing foods that support the hard work your body does every day.
Instead of overcommitting to every social or church event, choose to be fully present for one person or one conversation that matters to you.
None of these are drastic. But all of them are powerful—because they’re rooted in the present.
Change doesn’t require a dramatic overhaul. It requires presence. Purpose. And a small step—taken today.
Let go of the pressure to become someone new. Start showing up for who you already are.
Keep it simple,
-Ashley 💛
